SERUM MAGNESIUM LEVELS AMONG TYPE 2 DIABETIC PATIENTS AND PREDIABETIC SUBJECTS IN DUHOK CITY/ IRAQ

Background: Type 2 diabetes mellitus and prediabetes are reported to be associated with abnormalities in the metabolism of magnesium. Magnesium deficiency by itself may a contributing factor progression its complications. Methods: cross-sectional study was carried out at Diabetic unit Azadi teaching hospital. A total 248 subjects were included constituting 99 patients mellitus, 50 Prediabetes Mellitus as control group that apparently healthy subjects.Results: The present has found significant decrease serum magnesium levels diabetic prediabetic compared controls (1.88±0.23, 1.93±0.20, 2.00±0.17 mg/dl respectively, P=0.003). rate hypomagnesaemia high among (23.2%, 10.0%, 3.0%, respectively). highest frequency those poor glycemic control, old age, increased fasting glucose, who also overweight obese.Conclusion: have higher ofhypomagnesaemia lower mean Mg level subjects.
